During and after World War II, a pesticide called DDT was used by the U.S. to prevent diseases like typhus and malaria. DDT quickly gained popularity and was praised as a miracle. In 1962, Rachel Carson published a book titled Silent Spring protesting the use of DDT and synthetic pesticides. DDT was soon banned from use. Silent Spring broke barriers for humanity as a revolutionary body of research that challenged the way people regarded the relationship between humans and nature.
